Traveler
Savannah is a city rich in history, Southern charm and old-fashioned
hospitality. Savannah's distinctive city plan was designed in 1733 by
General James E. Oglethorpe, the founder of the colony of Georgia.
Oglethorpes's design plan was based on a grid system of 24 square areas
known as wards. Each ward featured an open park like space at the
center
that was surrounded by equal sized lots for private homes and four
larger lots for public buildings.
Today, 21 of the original 24 squares still
exist, boasting some of the
finest examples of architecture in America. Over 1,600 restored
structures are rated as historically and architecturally significant in
a variety of styles including Federal, Georgian, Gothic Revival, Greek
Revival, Italianate, Regency, Victorian, Colonial and more.

The Historic District
of Savannah, encompassing an area of 2.5 square
miles, is the largest registered urban National Historic Landmark
district in the United States.
Savannah offers world-class restaurants, Civil War forts, dozens of art
galleries, fine antique shops, and much more.
