A Journey to Pasaquan

President Jimmy Carter's Sunday School Class
at Maranatha Baptist Church

One of the highlights of our trip was a visit to Plains, Georgia, the hometown of 39th President Jimmy Carter, just 10 miles from Americus.

On 2 or 3 Sundays a month, the former President makes a special appearance at Marantha Baptist Church in Plains. Wearing his habitual bolo tie and open-collared shirt, the Nobel Prize-winning elder statesman deliverd his weekly Sunday School lesson to us and the few hundred others assembled at the church. Carter discussed events of the world and the efforts of his Carter Center to resolve conflicts around the globe. His unique perspective on national and international events was entertwined with country wisdom and a little gospel. It was an extraordinary experience.

It was amazing getting to see and hear the former leader of the free world teach Sunday School in a small rural church. It was fascinating to see how he conducts these regular classes with modesty and with little fanfare, as if he were  just a regular peanut farmer.

This was truly a weekend we will never forget!
